People living close to the damaged bridge at Kasapeen in the Ahafo Region have called on the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to, as soon as possible, fix the bridge to forestall any mishap from happening.
They described the state of the bridge as dangerous and a threat to life.
Unconfirmed reports say the bridge got damaged when it was hit by a truck couple of years ago.
Some of the residents also claimed that some damage was done to the bridge last December by some overloaded trucks and called on the Ghana Highways Authority 'GHA' to carry out regular maintenance works on bridges across the country and also strictly enforce the axle load regime.
Residents
Mr Kodjo Boasiako , who claimed to be present when the bridge was damaged at the later part of last year, told Krlivez News that a truck carrying an cocoa from the Ahafo Region towards the Western Part of Ghana caused the damage.
He said the driver of the truck bolted after the incident.
A 207 driver, Sarif, also complained about the state of the bridge and questioned the kind of materials used in constructing it.
A trader who gave her name only as Aisha complained to the Krlivez News that while it was not safe for her to use the bridge, crossing the road was equally dangerous.
When the Krlivez News examined the footbridge, it was seen that many of the concrete and metal beams and slabs were broken. There were cracks in the middle of the bridge and it poses serious threat to the road people who use the bridge that linked Ahafo and western region.
Statement
Meanwhile, statement issued early last year and signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the GHA, Mr Ernest Kingsley Arthur, said “a contractor is presently mobilising to execute the works”, adding that the works would be completed in two weeks.
The statement assured the public that the current state of the bridge posed no risk to public safety.
Krlivez.com however, can confirm that the deteriorated bridge has since not been renovated, worsening the plight of commuters.
